Artificial intelligence start-up OpenAI is set to air its first-ever TV commercial during the Super Bowl LIX this Sunday, the Wall Street Journal reported on Wednesday.

The Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ: MSFT)-backed start-up, which shot up in popularity with the launch of its ChatGPT tool in 2022, has so far engaged in no promotional activity or conventional advertising, despite having about 300 million weekly active users as of December 2024.

Its reported plans to advertise during the Super Bowl- by far the most-watched sporting event in the U.S.- could also reflect the start-up’s intent to pivot further into a for-profit business model.

The halftime show during the Super Bowl is regarded as prime-time advertising space and is heavily sought after by companies, commanding millions of dollars in advertising fees.

The Verge recently reported that the Super Bowl will feature a large amount of AI-related ads in 2025, amid the rapidly growing popularity of the technology.
